Beneficial Uses
Beneficial Use are key declarations on how we as a community think that Darwin Harbour should be used. There are a number of beneficial
use categories and for Darwin Harbour more than one category may be declared.
The beneficial use categories are shown below:

To provide water to meet aesthetic, recreational and cultural needs |
| Aquaculture |
To provide water for commercial production of aquatic animals including related research |
| Public Water Supply |
To provide source water for drinking purposes delivered through community water supply systems |
| Environment |
To provide water to maintain the health of aquatic ecosystems |
| Riparian |
Public rights and ownership rights to take water for domestic and/or stock purposes |
| Manufacturing Industry |
To provide water for secondary industry including related research |
Following public consultation, The NT Government has declared Beneficial Uses for Darwin Harbour (PDF).
The current beneficial uses of Darwin Harbour are aquatic ecosystem protection, recreational water quality and aesthetic. This beneficial use declaration includes stringent water quality requirements.
